Reinventing Architecture and Interiors:
the past, the present and the future
An International Conference on the re-use and re-design of buildings in contemporary settings
Thursday 29th and Friday 30th March 2012
Conference Outline:
The history of design has traditionally been a story of new ideas, new theories and, above all, new construction. However, today, the developed world is on the cusp of a new era. The financial crisis, the sustainability movement and the conservation agenda are all leading to ever more alterations of existing buildings and ever fewer new build projects. This new condition will have major consequences for all those involved in the design of the built environment both now and in the future.
The objective of the conference is to examine the practice of interior design and architectural re-use in the context of this new condition. It will look at historical tendencies, current conditions and future possibilities.
The conference will be diverse and inclusive in outlook. It will encourage debate on professionalism, the creative process, representation, innovation and the importance of precedent. It welcomes case studies, research projects, theoretical texts, technological insights and thoughts on education and practice.
The theme of PAST, PRESENT and FUTURE offers participants the chance to look at any aspect of the theme from the vantage point of time.
Delegates are expected to deliver a 20 minute presentation and submit a 3000 word paper. Selected texts will be published in an accompanying book.
Key note speakers: David Dunster and Paul Finch
Key dates:
1st November 2011 Submission of 300 words abstracts
14th November 2011 Abstract Feedback

Suggested Themes:
The conference aims to be diverse and inclusive. Proposals are welcome from all disciplines. The common thread is a focus on the renovation of buildings and interiors seen in the context of the past, the present or the future.
The following is simply a guideline of possible questions / themes:
What are the socio-economic, political or cultural factors that have led to an increased importance for the renovation of buildings and their interiors?
What themes dominate the practice of re-design and re-use today?
Do current issues have historical roots and will they resonate in the future?
What will be the cultural and social changes of the future that will influence the re-design of existing spaces and buildings?
How have the artistic, creative, theoretical, scientific and / or philosophical trends of the past influenced our approach to alteration today?
What are the past, current and future characteristics of education that could inform our tactics and strategies of re-use?
Is the traditionally understood distinction between architecture and interior design likely to change in a context of ever growing re-use?
Is there a direct relationship between re-use and sustainability and if so, what are its defining characteristics?
What was / is / will be the role of construction, design and visualisation technologies in our approach to re-designing existing spaces?
What are, have been, and what will be, the creative processes used by spatial designers working with existing structures and buildings?
Is there anything that distinguishes the creative process of designers working with existing structures?
